The New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) is the only qualifying body for professional photographers in New Zealand, and currently has over 350 members across New Zealand covering the divisions of Wedding, Portrait and Commercial Photography.
First founded in 1938, the NZIPP is a non-profit Incorporated Society run by professional image-makers. The NZIPP represents the interests of professional photographers across New Zealand on issues relevant to the industry such as copyright, legal and business matters, and technical developments in rapidly changing areas such as digital imaging. It cultivates friendship and mutual understanding between photographers and raises the profile of professional photography through its activities and events.
Through a demanding Accreditation process, we enable members to gain professional recognition in the form of NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer. This, in addition to the stringent membership criteria and Code of Ethics ensures that members are professional in both their creative and business practices. Comprising professional photographers from all over New Zealand who support, challenge, and encourage each other, the Institute strives to maintain and promote the highest professional standards in the industry through education, fellowship and support.
The Infocus Conference is the only major annual event for photography professionals in New Zealand. The Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards judging is held for three days prior to the conference, to maximise the benefit, and minimise time out of the office for both members and sponsors alike. Infocus provides a forum for the New Zealand professional photography industry to come
together to achieve a number of objectives:
• To celebrate the craft of professional photography;
• To discuss important issues facing the industry;
• To provide professional development for photographers;
• To create networking opportunities between suppliers and photographers; and
• To raise the profile of the Institute and photographers across New Zealand.
The NZIPP has been running the annual NZ Professional Iris Photography Awards for more than 30 years, celebrating the excellence of New Zealand professional photography across a wide range of
photographic genres. As well as recognising the outstanding achievements of a small number of photographers through the major awards, the event also provides an opportunity for every professional photographer across the country to earn merit awards to enhance their marketing profile.
The NZ Iris Professional Photography Awards attract in excess of 1100 entries from both New Zealand and overseas annually. There are four major awards:
• New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year;
• Overseas Professional Photographer of the Year;
• James White Memorial Award; and
• Highest Scoring Print.
Iris Award entries are received across twelve categories:
- Portrait Classic
- Portrait Creative
- Wedding Classic
- Wedding Creative
