It's a good idea to book your flights soon to get the best deal - we recommend logging on to www.houseoftravel.co.nz to compare airline deals. There are daily direct flights to Tauranga from Auckland and Wellington (so other airports will connect via these cities).  For those coming up from the South Island, there are direct flights from Christchurch to Tauranga (and v.v) MON to FRI.  Don't forget about options to fly into Auckland, Hamilton, or Rotorua - with these destinations being a two 1/2 hour drive or less to Tauranga. Flights to these desitinations can often be more competitive.
